Tonight was movie night. Pops has my dear Trudy fixed up once again, so I decided to take her for a spin to the video store where Poppy and I picked up three movies. We watched two of them--Julie & Julia and UP! And not only did Julie & Julia inspire me to blog as well as buy Julia Child's Mastering the Art of French Cooking , but they both also had a common theme that I am pondering over in my mind. That theme is dreams, adventures, living. Julie & Julia is about chasing after something. Doing something that to give meaning to your life and changing yourself in the process. UP! is about having dreams and chasing after them, wherever they may take you--even to Paradise Falls. What I loved about UP! was that it had a much deeper theme than just chasing after your dreams. belonging

I'm supposed to be writing a sermon for a baccalaureate service we are having at our church tomorrow night to celebrate our high school graduates. Don't worry. I'll get it finished. But as I'm thinking about what to say to young people who are getting ready to cross a threshold in our community and culture, I'm also processing words that were recently spoken at a college graduation at a private Catholic university.  Here's the thing. Harrison Butker is a phenomenal football kicker. Last year he missed two field goals the entire season. He was responsible for the Chiefs making it to overtime in the Super Bowl, setting a Super Bowl record for the longest field goal ever made. Without his work, the Chiefs would not have won the Super Bowl, but they also probably wouldn't have made it to the Super Bowl. listening

Sometimes when we listen to God, He tells us some great Spiritual Truth. Sometimes He tells us to read a specific verse or a chapter from a book that we have read before. Sometimes it is something incredibly practical like "clean out that junk box you have been keeping under your bed." I have been feeling lately that God is preparing to do something in my life and in the lives of the people closest to me, and so He has been telling me to do practical things. I have been cleaning out boxes and drawers and getting rid of things that I don't have a need for, throwing away junk and yes, I did clean out the junk box under my bed. In all of this I am aware of God's incredible faithfulness. I went through my journals and organized them and packed them into a box. As I was doing that I read snippets from over the past years.
