change the world
*Fair Warning: I have been on the verge of tears for the last couple of days, so this might be an emotional blog post.
Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed people can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has. - Margaret Mead
Last night I experienced this. I have been blessed to be surrounded with an incredible group of women who love God and are committed to following after His will and His heart. For the first time in about a year and a half, we got to spend an entire evening together catching up and soaking up quality time with each other. We all tried not to think of the circumstances surrounding why we were all getting together.
One of these dear ladies is leaving. She is doing what she is supposed to do. She is following after God's heart and leading which is sadly leading her away from this place. We got together to celebrate our friend, to connect with each other one more time before we say good-bye. It is so difficult to think that in one week she will be gone, moving halfway across the country. And I know that she will change the world around her because she carries with her the One who alone can change the world.
You see, this group of ladies is special to my heart, but more than that, we are a group who is changing the world, whether we see it or not. I know that we are because we are committed to God. Our lives are submitted to His will and His plan. We are women of singularity of heart, and God honors that.
Besides, I know that we are changing the world because I can see it changing around us. The oldest and wisest of these ladies helped her husband start a ministry that now reaches hundreds of college students every week. She has mentored countless young women and couples. Her influence is far-reaching beyond what she could ever imagine or see.
Another of these ladies is a college instructor. She touches the lives of her students every day and encourages and uplifts them in this incredibly formative time of their lives. Her generosity extends to everyone around her and if she can do something to help anyone she will. She is an artist and uses her talents to bring beauty into the world to the wonder and enjoyment of those around her.
One lady has been a missionary to Guatemala ministering to orphans and widows with her husband. Her story brought tears to my eyes when I first heard it, and she is living proof that God heals and restores all things. She and her husband continue to serve on the mission field here at home, reaching into the lives of the hurting and forsaken, building relationships with them and being Jesus to those around them.
Another lady is also active on the mission field to the college students with her husband, even as she has an incredible heart for world missions. She has traveled to Africa to love on the hurting there, to minister to the orphans and those affected by the war torn region. She longs to be reaching the nations, but for now is working at reaching the nations through where she is.
We prayed last night. The group of us gathered in a circle with a fire in the fireplace, candles flickering, and mugs of jasmine tea on the table. We prayed for protection, for provision, for guidance. We prayed for comfort. We invited God to do His work in our lives. I know that we are changing the world because we walk into the throne room of the Ruler of the Universe, and we ask Him to change the world.
