about the body

I love when God shows up in the every day things of life. When He shows up in an ordinary thing, I am suddenly so aware of it becoming so much more than ordinary. This is one of the things that I love so much about my job. I feel like every day I discover something new that gives me an even deeper understanding of God, His character and His Word.

I took a class a couple weeks ago (I guess it's maybe five weeks now) to learn Bowen, a massage therapy treatment. It is a really remarkable treatment that helps the body to heal itself and restores the body to normal functioning. It opens the pathways of the body to be able to communicate clearly and allows the body to change adapted habits that have unknowingly been taken on and are actually harming the body.

I love learning about the body because several times Paul refers to the church as a body, so learning about the body should teach us about the church. I also love learning about the body because I'm a nerd, but that's beside the point. When I learn about the body and how it functions that gives me a clearer insight into the church and how it should function.

Each member of the body of Christ has unique set of giftings, skills and abilities. We each have been given certain talents to develop for the building up of the body of Christ and to advance the Kingdom of God. We don't get to pick what those gifts are, but we are responsible for developing them and using them to the best of our abilities.

Isn't that kind of unfair that we don't get to pick what we are gifted with? Well, I could look at it that way. I could choose to be upset that my friend is a gifted songbird and anointed lyricist and worship leader. I could choose to be frustrated that another friend is an incredible artist and graphic designer.

But you know what? I don't hear my eye getting upset because it doesn't hear. I don't hear my mouth being angry because it doesn't smell. My body doesn't argue with itself about what the individual jobs are of different parts. They just do what they are supposed to do.

If I focus on my friends' gifting of singing or designing, I would miss out on my own gift of touch and healing. We can't all be worship leaders. We can't all be artists. We can't all be healers. We need each person doing the job that they are called to do, so that the body can build itself up in love. (Ephesians 4)
